My Frame

Values

My values for athletics and education stem from a family of educators and athletes. My dad instilled in us the value of a team, not an individual. He never believed in MVP trophies, and I think that to this day. Our individual choices affect the team on and off the field, therefore we must show class, respect, and integrity in everything we do. My father instilled in us that the most disciplined and hardworking team will win. This is evident in his 10 championships in 12 seasons. I instill these values in my players, as they will influence their actions both on and off the field. I focus on having an environment where athletes understand the power of discipline, hard work, accountability, and cohesiveness for their individual and team success.

Culture and Background

I grew up in Aiken, South Carolina, a small southern town where football is king. Aiken seemed to shut down on Friday nights. We had a strong sense of community and belonging, which influenced my values. I looked forward to seeing my older brother play football on Friday nights. He was a superhero in my eyes. This influenced me to want to play football also. The motto at Aiken High was "Pride, Class, Courage & The Will to Win." This motto was meant to be used on and off the field. Sports were not only about competing on the field but were also meant as a tool for life lessons. In high school, we would visit nursing homes once a year as part of community service. Our coaches and administrators believed in giving back to the community. My goal is to instill these values into my athletes to equip them to be successful in life.

Life Experiences

My personal life experiences greatly influenced my philosophy as a coach. Going from a sophomore year recording only one sack to a junior year leading a team to winning the state championship with thirteen sacks solidified my philosophy. Athletics is truly won in the offseason. You get out of it exactly what you put into it. I went from 185 lbs to 205 lbs in seven months. I believe that you must maximize the potential of your athletes and see the best in them. This gives them the confidence they need to succeed. My coaches seeing something in me that I could not see in myself was the reason I was able to be a successful high school and college player. My experiences allow me to relate to athletes during the toughest of times. They allow me to mentor athletes and help them push through to be successful.

Coaching Context

I am in my second year coaching football at South Forsyth High School in Cumming, Georgia. I coach the linebackers in a 3-4 defensive scheme. I also serve as the 9th grade boys basketball head coach and the strength and conditioning coach for football and basketball. I love working with this age group as they can be shaped and molded as I was. Many of my athletes lack discipline at home and are seeking it elsewhere. I strive to provide the discipline and consistency these athletes need to be successful in sports and life.
